Fried Cauliflower

Fried Cauliflower

Fried cauliflower, also known as Cruvit (Hebrew – כרובית ), is a vegetarian dish served cold or hot, consisting of fried cauliflower, often accompanied by a dipping sauce, lettuce, parsley, tomatoes, and served on pita bread. Thai sweet chili sauce has become a favorite dipping sauce for fried cauliflower as well, however, it also tastes great eaten by itself.

Fried Cauliflower Recipe
Recipe type: Appetizer
Serves: 4
Ingredients
  • ½ cup Bread Crumbs (this particular recipe I use 'Golden Crisp - Homestyle Bread Crumbs' by Osem)
  • ½ cup All Purpose White Flour
  • 2 Eggs
  • ¼ teaspoon Turmeric
  • ¼ teaspoon Salt
  • ¼ teaspoon Black Pepper
  • 1 head of Cauliflower
  • Canola cooking oil (fill pan about ½ inch full)
Instructions
  1. In 3 separate bowls, add flour, eggs, and bread crumbs.
  2. Add the spices (turmeric, salt, black pepper) to the egg bowl and mix together well.
  3. Break the head of cauliflower into flowerets leaving some of the stalk intact.
  4. Add to pot and cover fully with water, adding a dash of salt. Cover pot and turn heat on high bringing pot to a boil. Once boiling, reduce heat to medium and continue cooking cauliflower for an additional 8 min.
  5. Strain cauliflower and let cool for about 20 minutes (it's important to let cauliflower cool or it will break apart when frying in oil).
  6. Take the cauliflower floweret pieces, and one after the other, cover in flour, dip in the egg mixture, and then cover with bread crumbs. Be sure to cover the pieces of cauliflower entirely with each ingredient. Set aside on plate.
  7. Fill frying pan with ½ inch of Canola oil and set heat to medium-high.
  8. Add flowerets to oil, frying a few pieces at a time till they are a nice golden brown color.
  9. Remove and drain on paper towel.
  10. Serve hot with any main dish or side dish.
